HORN SOUNDER & STEERING WHEEL 1963-68 The horn button or ring can be removed by pressing down evenly and turning button counterclockwise until it lifts out. Mark steering shaft and wheel hub before removing wheel so that the relationship between the wheel and steering gear is maintained when reinstalled. Then remove the nut from the steering ~ shaft and use a puller to remove the Wheel. 1969 Rim-Blow Type The rubber insert and copper strip assembly is not replaceable. Therefore if a new insert is required the entire steering wheel will have to be replaced. 1. Unfasten and remove pad from steering wheel (3 screws). 2. Remove the medalion from the pad. 3. After removing retaining nut thef steering wheel can be removed with a puller. 1968-69 Except Rim-Blow Type 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove steering wheel hub. 3. Remove horn button (3 screws); springs will fall out. 4. Remove steering wheel. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL 1963-65 Fairlane To replace the fuel gauge, temperature gauge, speedometer and cluster dial, it is necessary to remove the instrument cluster assembly. 1. Disconnect battery cable and cable at speedometer head. Remove in-strument cluster wiring harness from two clips at rear of cluster. 2. Remove cluster retaining screws from instrument panel. Pull out cluster and place it on steering column. Protect column with cloth. 3. Disconnect fuel and temperature gauge wires, turn signal flasher and constant voltage regulator. 4. Remove lights from cluster. 5. Remove cluster assembly. 6. Remove screws attaching cluster to bezel and remove bezel. Instruments may then be removed. 1966 Fairlane 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove radio knobs and nuts. 3. Disconnect speedometer cable. 4. Remove screws from cluster and position it outward. 5. Disconnect bulbs, constant voltage regulator and ground wire, clock and fuel gauge. 6. Remove cluster to workbench for service required. 1967 Fairlane 1. Disconnect ground cable at battery. 2. Disconnect cable from speedometer. 3. Unfasten cluster from panel and tilt cluster forward. 4. Disconnect wiring and bulb sockets and remove cluster to workbench for service required. 1968-69 Fairlane 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove instrument panel cover. 3. Remove right instrument panel shield. 4. Unfasten cluster (5 screws) and position cluster out. 5. Disconnect speedometer cable, ta-chometer (if equipped) and multiple plug from printed circuit and remove cluster. Cluster components are now accessible for service. W/S WIPER TRANSMISSION 1963-66 Electric Wiper 1. Remove wiper blades and arms. 2. Remove pivot shaft nut, bezel and gasket. 3. Disconnect wiper link from motor and remove link and pivot shaft. 4. To install reverse removal procedure. 1967-69 Fairlane 1. Remove wiper arms and blades. 2. Remove cowl top grille panel. 3. Remove drive arm to pivot clip and remove pivot shaft and link assembly. 4. Reverse procedure to install. W/S WIPER SWITCH 1963-65 Electric Type 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove switch knob and bezel. 3. Pull switch from under instrument 1966 Fairlane 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove both control knobs and disconnect washer. 3. From lower edge of cluster remove retaining screws from switches. 4. Disconnect electrical leads and remove switch assembly from instrument panel. 5. Remove screw and separate wiper and washer switches from each other including plastic bar between switches. 6. Assemble wiper and washer switches to each other including plastic bar so that when washer switch is turned on wipers will start. 7. Reverse procedure to install. 1967 Fairlane 1. Disconnect ground cable from battery. 2. Remove wiper switch control knobs. 3. From lower edge of instrument cluster, unfasten switch from panel (3 screws). 4. Disconnect switch wiring connectors from switch and remove switch. 5. Remove retaining screw and plastic bar and separate washer switch from wiper switch. 6. Reverse procedure to install. 1968-69 Fairlane 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove switch control knob and bezel nut. 3. Unplug and remove switch. 4. Reverse procedure to install. RADIO REPLACE 1963 Fairlane 1. Pull off control nobs and remove nuts retaining radio to instrument panel. 2. Disconnect antenna lead to right side of radio, speaker lead and pilot light wire at wiring harness. 3. Disconnect radio lead wire at fuse panel and remove wire from clips. 4. Remove radio back support bracket-to-radio retaining nut. 5. Remove radio from instrument panel. 1964-65 Fairlane 1. Pull radio control knobs off and re-move nuts holding radio to panel. 2. Disconnect antenna lead at right side of radio. 3. Disconnect speaker lead. 4. Disconnect radio lead wire at fuse panel on lighting switch and discon-nect pilot light wire. Remove lead wire from clips. 5. Unfasten radio from support bracket (one nut) and lift radio from Instru-ment panel. 1966-67 Fairlane 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Pull off radio knobs and remove nuts securing radio to instrument panel. 3, Disconnect antenna lead at right side of radio (at back of AM-FM radio). 4. Disconnect speaker lead. 5. Disconnect radio lead wire and dial light wire from quick disconnect. 6. Remove radio support bracket. 7. Remove radio from under instrument panel. 8. Reverse procedure to install. HEATER CORE REMOVAL 1963-64 Fairlane Disconnect defroster tubes and heater hoses at heater. It is necessary to remove glove box on 1964 models. Remove heater retaining nuts on engine side of cowl. From inside of car, disconnect rubber boot, at fresh air inlet, then disconnect control cables at heater. To gain access to core, remove heater and separate to halves of heater housng. 1965-66 Fairlane The heater core is mounted in the heater case in a diagonal position in the center of the case and is serviced through an opening in the back plate. With the heater assembly out of the vehicle, simply remove four screws from the cover plate and pull the core from the housing. The core is mounted in the heater housing with rubber pads oil each end to insure a snug fit. 1967-69 Fairlane 1. Drain cooling system and disconnect both heater hoses at dash. 2. Unfasten heater from dash. 3. Disconnect temperature and defroster cables at heater. 4. Disconnect wires from resistor, and blower motor wires and clip retaining heater to defroster nozzle. 5. Remove glove box. 6. Remove bolt and nut retaining right air duct control to instrument panel. 7. Remove nuts retaining right air duct and remove duct. 8. Take heater assembly to bench. Then remove heater core cover and pad and lift out core. OIL PAN REPLACE 1963 V8's 1. Remove oil dipstick. 2. Remove crossmeniber. 8. Remove oil pan bolts and crank engine as required to gain clearance for pan removal. 4. When installing pan, position oil pan front seal on timing case cover. Be sure tabs on seal are over oil pan gasket. This also applies to the seal on the rear main bearing cap. 1963 Sixes 1. On car with manual shift transmission, remove clutch retracting spring. 2. Remove crossmember. 3. Unfasten and pull stabilizer bar downward. 4. Remove oil pan retaining bolts and crank engine as required to gain clearance and remove pan. 5. When installing the pan, position the oil pan front seal on the timing case cover. Be sure the tabs on seal are over the oil pan gasket. This also applies to the seal on the rear main bearing cap. 64-66 Sixes 1. Drain englne oil. 2. Remove oil level dipstick and fly-wheel housing lower cover. 3. Unfasten and remove oil pan. 1964 V8's 1. Drain engine oil and remove oil level dipstick. 2. Remove starter and dust seal. 3. Remove oil pan bolts and crank engine as required to obtain clearance and remove oil pan. 1965 V8s 1. Drain crankcase and remove dipstick. 2. Lower stabilizer bar, disconnect one end of crossmember and loosen other end, then lower crossmember. 3. Remove oil pan bolts and crank engine as required to obtain clearance and remove pan. 1966 V8-390 1. Drain crankcase and remove oil level dipstick. 2. Remove oil pan screws and lower pan to crossmember. position crankshaft so that counterweight will clear pan. 3. Remove oil pump retaining bolts and place pump, inlet tube screen and intermediate drive shaft in oil pan. 4. Remove oil pan and pump. 1967-69 V8-390, 427, 428 1. If equipped with air c~onditioning, remove fan shroud from radiator and position it over fan. 2. Disconnect stabilizer bar and pull ends down under the front leading edge of the oil pan. Raise the engine about 1 1\4" and insert a 1" block of wood between insulators and frame crossmember, then remove floor jack. 3. Unfasten and lower oil pan to cross-member. 4. Crank engine to obtain necessary clearance between crankshaft counterweight and rear of oil pan. Remove upper bolt and loosen lower bolt on inlet tube. 5. Position inlet tube out of the way and remove oil pan. 6. Reverse procedure to install. 1967-69 V8-289, 302, 351 1. Drain crankcase and remove oil level dipstick. 2. Lower stabilizer bar. 3. Remove oil pan bolts and crank engine as required to obtain clearance for removal of pan. 1967-69 Sixes 1. Remove oil level dipstick and fly-wheel housing inspection cover. 2. Remove one bolt and loosen the other on the No. 2 crossmember and lower It out of the way. 3. Remove oil pan and gasket. 4. Reverse procedure to install.
