Chuck Stebelton's 1966 Fairlane 390 GT
In 1982 we were traveling thru the southern states and while stopping to look at a 1966 Mustang at Madison Motors South in Jackson, Tennessee, I spotted this 1966 390-GT parked near a fence under a tree. I talked to the owner of the dealership about it, but he said that he didn't want to sell it Two days later I woke up in Popular Bluff, Missouri with this Fairlane still on my mind. I called Hillard Hampton (the proprietor) and we struck a deal and I drove back down to Jackson and worked on it for two days and got it road worthy and drove it back to Michigan.
I did a cosmetic restoration on it in 1983. It won many trophies at local car shows but most of all I enjoyed driving the car. In 1996, I did a body on restoration on the car taking 4 years of my spare time to get it done. All panels and every piece of trim and all nuts and bolts were removed and refinished. I refinished the Fairlane in the original color of Springtime Yellow using Sherwin-Williams lacquer.
The Fairlane was sold new in Corinth, Mississippi. I was told that the lady who bought it new traded in her 1937 Chevrolet. One of the reasons she chose this Fairlane was because it has a 3-speed manual floor shift.
I have added a factory clock and the optional woodgrain steering wheel. These are the only two options that the car has. No power steering or brakes. Just 335 pure horsepower from the 390 cubic inch "S" code. engine.
