Andrew & Carol Bolliger's 1967 Fairlane 4 Door
I just finished (or is it ever done) my 67 Fairlane 500 restoration. I attached a few pictures of before and after. This project is unique because it is probably the first 4 door that you have seen look this good. I chose the 4 door 500 sedan for a couple reasons. First it was cheap! Secondly, I haven't seen many of them and thought the unique nature of this car makes for a more interesting ride that the many 2 door version that I see everywhere. I think hot rodders need to open their horizons a little as these cars get more expensive and scarce, you can have more fun in a four door and spend less money.
I basically started with the body because the engine is a great running 289 with factory power brakes and steering. The body as you can see from the pictures was a mess, there were many dents to pull... but very little rust repair (just the drivers side lower rear quarter panel). Next we shaved much of the trim and badges, in fact the only remaining badge is the rear "Fairlane 500" one. I wanted a clean look and I think this worked well. I got many replacement parts from AutoCrafters and Dearborn Classics to replace the small parts and seals/gaskets. The front window was replaced with a urethane sealant and the rear window was re-used with a new gasket. All the trim around the windows is original. For paint we stripped the car and painted the interior at the same time so all the jams match, the undersides of the hood and truck are also matching. The paint job is a Foose inspired two tone metallic green and pearl white. The interior was completely custom upholstered in the same green and white (Restyle Upholstery in Philomath, OR), new grant steering wheel, new carpet and jute underpayment, new headliner, seatbelts, and other little things. Basically then I turned to the suspension where I put on a Crites kit for moving the rear leaf springs in three inches on each side, this allowed the 10" rear wheels to fit. I have a lot more information on this kit if anyone is interested, it is not easy to install and the instructions are bad, plus some parts need modifications. The wheels are 20" Verde rims with 30 series tires for a bad custom look. Overall I am very please with the results and have received a lot of positive comments. In the future I will strap on some more performance parts to the engine and probably put a new coilover suspension on the whole car to increase handling.
