Darin Warnick's 1966 Fairlane 500 XL Convertible
My first car was a 66 Barracuda which I sold to move to Colorado. Going from the cuda to an 81 Subaru GL wagon was tough to take, but I wanted to try and live the snowboard dream, so I had to make a few sacrifices. Ever since then I have wanted to get another classic. Every summer for the past 3 years we have been on the hunt. We decided that if we were going to have a summer car, it might was well be a convertible!
Everyone has a Mustang or a Camaro and we wanted something different. After searching again for months, we came across this Fairlane 500XL convertible out in Ohio. After some checking I found out it was one of 4,560 made. I liked the overall style and lines of the car, especially the 66 and 67 Fairlanes. I really liked the 66's because of the tail lights and hood louvers. Well, after a few phone calls and few weeks of waiting, she finally arrived.
It originally was a 390 H code car (76C Convertible 500xl) that was medium palomino metallic. It has the 390, C6 sport shift auto, but now sports a Holly 4bbl, and an Edlebrock street performer intake. The guy I got it from said the mileage was original (he was the 3rd owner) at 39k. I cant verify that, but its probably right. We've done a few things here and there this summer including new seat covers, dash cap, weather stripping and Magnum 500 wheels. I had problems with the wheels covers coming off, so we decided on either the styled Ford wheels, or the Magnums. Found some good used Magnums, so that made the decision easy. I just ordered an electronic ignition for it and plan on doing suspension next.
