Seth Dover's 1966 Fairlane GTA Clone
This is a car my father and I wanted to do together as
our first father-son project. It was originally a Z
code XL car, and I wanted to make it a GTA clone. We
wanted to do every bit of the work ourselves, for
better or worse; no work was outsourced except the
headliner. We're both big on keeping things original,
or at least period correct. We took the drivetrain
out of a totaled 67 GTA and moved it over into this
car. First the S-code engine was rebuilt, adding a
428 cam, a windage tray, and sleeving two cylinders.
The heads have all new stainless valves and seats, and
new guides and double valve springs. The rest is all
stock, including the rebuilt C-6 transmission. It has
a 3.00 open 9" rearend. Although not original, my
favorite wheel for these cars has always been the
12-slots with the GT centercaps. I did all of the
body work myself, replacing all the floorpans,
toeboards, both quarters, adding Crites subframe
connectors, and painting it (my first paintjob,I give
myself a C-/D+). I recovered all of the seats and
added new door panels and carpet. It's not a
show-quality car by any means, but I'm very proud of
doing it myself with my father, and the time we shared
together was more valuable than any car a restoration
shop could have built for me. We enjoy taking it
together to the small little car shows in our area,
and we're always the only Fairlane there.
